Writing Question

Learning Goal: I’m working on a writing question and need a sample draft to help me learn.

This is a debate paper assignment to challenge your critical thinking skills. You must choose a position, either position 1 or position 2.

You must research the issue and provide support for your position from other sources such as textbooks, articles, journals, newspapers, etc. Your paper must be a minimum of 500 words not counting the reference list. You must include 3 references supporting your perspective. The references need to be presented in APA format both within the body of the essay and in the reference list. The debate paper must be submitted in Word as an attachment and placed in the dropbox. Please double space your paper.

Debate: After reading about Diversity and Difference Research: A Reflection on Categories and Categorization, select one of the two positions and present a strong argument for your position:

Position #1: Argue categorization of individuals is a valuable process for understanding and working with community members.

Position #2: Argue categorization of individuals is not a valuable process for understanding and working with community members.

Definition of categorization – “is the process by which society decides which individuals fit into the boxes used to create differences.”

Consider age, gender, race, ethnicity,

religion, political affiliation, and social class as categories. Also

include how community relations between public safety agencies and the

community are impacted by categorization.
