Topic 2: Importance of Cybersecurity
Do you think cybersecurity will be more important or less important in the future? Explain your answer.
Cybersecurity is going to be increasingly important in the future. As we learned in Unit 1 of this course, crime follows the trends of society, and security follows the crimes. As urbanization rose, urban crimes rose. The same is true of railroads, leading to the Pinkertons. Our reliance on technology is only going to grow, so it follows that crime and security will as well. This is especially troublesome because as we move more of our vital assets to networked assets, we are simultaneously increasing the attack surface with a wide variety of unsecure devices on the network. IoT security is going to be key to keeping things under control in the future.

Cybersecurity will be extremely important in the future. We have just entered the era of cyber warfare and the need to secure systems and defend systems has never been more important. Add to that the advent of the internet of things and other internet connected devices, security will become even more important as the attack surface grows with time.
More and more criminals are turning online to make money through criminal activities such as ransomware because it this is where the easy money is. In the early 1900s it used to be robbing banks but today it’s the digital world that is the lucrative space to make money.
Currently the global demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals is extremely high and there is a shortage. It is estimated that there is a shortage of skilled personnel to the tune of 561,000 in the US alone. Globally this number is around 4 million.
Finally with the rapid advancements of technology there will be a continued demand for cybersecurity. Therefore, yes, cybersecurity will be important in the future.
