After you discuss a state requirement and compare it to Medicare’s CoP, perform some research on the Joint Commission requirements for the facilities that they provide services to. Under ‘Standards’ choose ‘National Patient Safety Goals’ then choose one of the National Patient Safety Goal(s), (i.e. Ambulatory health, behavioral health, critical access hospital). Select the simplified version to read/describe. Give a brief overview (2-3 sentences) of what the National Patient Safety Goals are under the Joint Commission in general, and what the goals are for the current year of the type of facility you chose. Examples of National Patient Safety Goals:

Identify patients correctly NPSG.01.01.01 Use at least two ways to identify patients. For example, use the patient’s name and date of birth. This is done to make sure that each patient gets the correct medicine and treatment.

Prevent infection NPSG.07.01.01 Use the hand cleaning guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization. Set goals for improving hand cleaning. Use the goals to improve hand cleaning.
