In this scenario, I am a surgeon who has a patient that is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. I am interested in researching the outcomes in patients who have undergone a surgical procedure known as arthroplasty to restore their deformed arms. From previous experiences I have performed the procedure on a number of patients who seem to be very satisfied about how they look after the surgery and therefore they give positive feedback. Bloch, J. R., Courtney, M. R., & Clark, M. L. (2018). Despite the positive feedback from the patients I question if the arms of the patient’s function well after the surgical procedure or the positive feedback from the patients is due to their hands looking less deformed than how they were before the procedure. I therefore want to conduct research on this topic to determine whether arthroplasty has better results on the patients than no surgery at all on the affected areas.
There are various strategies I will utilize to increase rigor and effectiveness when searching regarding the PICOT question. The first strategy is to choose the most significant keywords and I will also utilize various Boolean operators such as “OR” and “NOT.” Another strategy is to limit the search to peer-reviewed articles to ensure that the information obtained is relevant and effective to avoid research errors. It is also crucial to limit the search to articles produced within the last five years to ensure the information obtained is relevant and represents current issues. If the materials are from the past, they might not be effective because the research is on a recent clinical issue. Finally, the significant words must be in the title of the research materials. Utilizing the strategies will ensure that the information about the PICOT question is adequate.
Which study methods can be used to determine the effect of surgery on patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis
There are 2 study types that can be used in this research
i) Randomized control trial
This is a study type where the people to take part in the study are chosen at random from an eligible population
This type of study is not suitable for this research since surgical procedures cannot be conducted on random people
ii)Prospective Cohort studies
In this type of study, a group of individuals who have undergone a surgical procedure and another group who have not undergone surgery are observed over a long period of time to determine the effect of the surgical procedure. Bloch, J. R., Courtney, M. R., & Clark, M. L. (2018).
Do patients who have undergone arthroplasty show better performance than those who have not
Arthroplasty surgery was performed on a group of patients and their progress was observed over a period of time. Questionnaires were also given to the patients to get feedback on the patients about their recovery and performance.
According to the information obtained from the questionnaires and biochemical measurements, there was a great improvement in the performance of the hand.
