Training and technology play key roles in the success of groups, teams, and organizations that are dispersed geographically. Recent estimates indicate that a majority of professional workers today spend time working in virtual, or dis- persed, teams—teams in which group members work interdependently across space and time. Due to globalization and a variety of related factors, virtual teams will be increasingly important in businesses and organizations. In order for these groups to overcome the barriers associated with being spread apart—sometimes across very different cultures—training and tech- nology to facilitate communication, transactive memory systems, and personal accountability are especially important.
